Huck Finn Essay Example For Students

Huck Finn Essay You Cant Pray A Lie is a pivotal excerpt taken from Mark Twains classic The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Like Twains other works, this example of moral truth and consequence undermines the basic sense of human values. Set in the 1880s on a raft upon the Mississippi River, Huck is caught in a battle of personal conflicting views. It is through his interactions with Jim, a runaway black slave, that he faces the realization that being ultimately true to himself means that he cannot pray a lie. Jim had run away from his abusive father and enabling small town to find himself traveling down the Mississippi on a raft. His traveling partner was a black slave, Jim. Wondering why Jim was there, Huck discovers that Jim had run away from his slave owner, Ms. Watson. Jim had spoken about his harsh life as a slave, and resented talk of being sold down to Orleans for a big stack o money. Huck felt that Jims escape was wrong, but kept his promise of secrecy, like any good friend would. In lieu of his escape, Jim emphasized his feelings of becoming a free man. Jim said it made him all over trembly and feverish to be so close to freedom (p. 238). Huck came to the realization that Jim was escaping for a far different reason than he, and began to see this niggers freedom as his own fault; he was an accomplice. Hucks conscience became plagued by the fact that Jim was escaping the custody of his rightful owner, and he was doing nothing to stop this. In Hucks eyes, Jim was essentially the property of poor old Ms. Watson, who didnt do anything less than teach Jim his manners and his books. Altogether, Huck felt that he was doing wrong by concealing this, and felt miserable to say the least. Jims anticipation for freedom grew higher as he expressed his future dreams and aspirations. Jim began saying things that niggers wouldnt normally dare say. Jim was speaking like a white man, not like someones property, a slave. This attitude began to lower Hucks vision of Jim, and his conscience grew even hotter. Huck had never been exposed to a slave who spoke this way. It was his inadequate education that told him this was wrong. Jim stopped the raft with intentions of surrendering Jim. At this point he heard Jim yell: Pooty soon Ill be a-shoutn for joy, en Ill say, its on accounts oHuck; Is a free man, en I couldnt ever ben free ef it hadn been for Huck; Huck done it. Jim wont ever forgit you, Huck; yous de bes fren Jims ever had; en yous de only fren ole Jims got now (p. 239).This was a turning point for Hucks emotions. The line between what was expected of him and what his emotions felt began to clash. Hearing Jim say this hit Huck right in the heart, and he began to view Jim n ot as a slave, but as a person, a friend. The race card was slowly loosing its importance to Huck. However, he had been conditioned to believe that the right thing to do was to turn Jim in. When it came time to confess though, Huck lied to spare Jims life. His emotions had over powered his duty to public policy. This shows signs of Hucks ability to think for himself, rather than being that of a follower. Nonetheless, Jim is later captured leaving Huck with the decision of what must be done. Huck felt that writing a letter to Ms. Watson would be the proper path to take. He overturns this notion however on account of how Ms. Watson would view Jim, and how the others would think Huck was a nigger helper. Thus, it would be equally shameful for both of them. By not doing so, he was ultimately protecting both of them. He thinks as long as he can hide it, it aint no disgrace (p. 242). Hucks conscience again is manipulated by what is seen to be right in the public eye. He knew that telling the truth would make him a good boy. Huck did have intentions of doing what was right in life, but knew in his own head that this wasnt necessarily the right moral answer. Indeed he could hide this information from the slave owners, but he couldnt hide it from God. People may be gullible, but God can see beyond petty lies and wrongdoings. Therefore, praying would not help to cure this situation because you simply cannot hide it: You cannot pray a lie! This understanding was probably the most important spiritual notion that Huck could have discovered. In theory, it set him free. Huck did eventually write a letter to Ms. Watson telling the whereabouts of Jim. This action made him feel that he was doing the right thing. However, he began to think about the experiences in which he shared with Jim. He remembered how grateful Jim was to him, and how Jim thought of him as his only friend in the world. They had watched out for one another during their escape journey, and had found companion ship within. The fact that they were of different colors was not important. Rather, a sense of humanity was present between the two. With this, Huck ripped up the letter and had no thoughts of reforming. All right then, Ill go to hell-and tore it up (P. 243). He decided he would even go as far as to steal Jim out of slavery, because he felt that it was his moral obligation, his duty. The outcome symbolizes a deep sense of decision and morality as decided by Huck, a free man. Even though he may have thought it was wrong of him, he did it anyway. His moral conscience guided him to do what he believed was right. In reality, Huck made a wise decision that went against the aristocratic customs of his time. He saw beyond the foundation of slavery. He saw wonderful qualities in Jim that he may have never seen in any white man before. Most of all, he found love, friendship, and emotion. Hucks path is an example of the road that many took to bring African Americans out of slavery as well. This is a revolution that has progressed extensively since Twains time, but continues to be a problem in most all societies today. What is important is for people to take a deep look at interactions with others and what we can do to make our world a better place. It all begins with our sense of personal rights and wrongs. Rising Sea Level Essays - Coastal Geography, Coastal Engineering

Rising Sea Level Rising Sea Level Rising sea levels have been disturbing geographers and geologists for some time now. Scientists are constantly trying to prevent the effects rising waters are causing, which mainly includes beach and island erosion. So far, their attempts with man-made development on beaches along the eastern coast of America have only made things worse. "Up and down the U.S. coast, public money is subsidizing private property on islands made of sand, the stuff on which, as the Bible says, only fools build" (Ackerman 7). In recent years there has been a trend towards living on the barrier islands of America's Atlantic Coast. High rise condominiums, numerous shops, and several businesses have been built to sustain large populations on these islands and continue to be built. As a result, this vital chain of islands that lies between the ocean and the mainland are at risk. While interfering with the natural configuration of these islands, human construction has advanced the rate of beach erosion, thus leaving the mainland with no barriers during times of high surf. This effect has also led to costly, unnatural ways to preserve the barrier islands. Saving these islands in their natural state by curbing human encroachment will both protect mainland populations from high surf and save a considerable amount of federal money. The barrier islands are a chain of islands, stretching from New York to southern Texas, that have served as a critical barrier from the Atlantic Ocean for well over the past 4,500 years (Ackerman 23). These islands however are not as stable as those who live on them would like it to be. Beaches, and in fact whole islands, are constantly eroded as they are subjected to varying winds, currents and changing sea levels. Along Florida's East Coast, roughly 368 miles, the average shoreline change is retreating 22cm per year. Under natural conditions, native vegetation and shifting sands constantly replace or withhold sand on the islands (16). Unfortunately for the inhabitants of the barrier islands, this is a geological behavior which can only continue if the islands remain in a natural state. In recent years humans on these shorelines and islands have been responding to the naturally changing conditions, through the use of man made structures such as seawalls, groins, and sand replenishment, in an effort to save beachfront property from erosion. Obstructing the natural shifts of the islands, says Orrin Pilkey of Duke University who has studied these islands for thirty years, will cause them to, "be lost forever" (16-17). Attempting to hold beaches in place with the use of seawalls, groins, and sand replenishment may seem like a good solution in theory, but in practice they probe ineffective. One of the most common methods of attempting to hold barrier island beaches in place is through the use of sea walls, which are costly and ineffective. Seawalls are typically cement walls constructed parallel to the seashore in an effort to block waves from coming over the beach and into property. However, seawalls tend to withhold sand behind the wall during times of high surf and the natural tendency of the beach to respond to waves is disturbed (Kaufman 207). The structures commonly fail from undermining or erosion by waves breaking over their tops. Under normal conditions sand would be spread out by outgoing currents, which in turn would lower the slope of the beach and cause the waves to break gradually. With seawalls in place, sand remains stationary while waves erode the beach as wave energy is deflected against sand not protected by the seawall (208). In addition to advancing the erosion rate of the sand and inhibiting the beaches' natural tendencies, seawalls have become quite costly to maintain. For example, in New York $120 million was paid by the federal government to sustain and replenish seawall installations as of 1996, and repairs continue to be made (Dixon 231). Clearly, this method is both costly and ineffective. Another commonly used method of stopping erosion is the placement of groins, which are also ineffective. Groins are pilings of rocks that extend into the ocean and perpendicular to the shore. Like seawalls, the primary purpose of a groin is to trap sand, but in longshore currents rather than sand deposits already on the beach. Contrary to their intended purpose, these structures trap sand on the side facing a longshore current and leave the opposite side without sand (Kaufman 207). Over time, the side not facing longshore currents erodes and the initial problem reoccurs. Once again, after the unsuccessful use of groins, money and resources must be spent to restore the beach.

Funeration essays

Funeration essays I have known many people who went to war and I have heard a lot of stories about wars. In those wars, many persons fought and died in battles to defend their beliefs. After consequences of a major battle, a persons spirit is as shattered and broken as the bodies of those that were slain. The United States went through wars and are still going through wars such as war on Afghanistan and Iraq. Pericles Funeral Oration was a speech given by Pericles in honor of those who had died during the war. Pericless Funeral Speech has been thousands of years since many issues of his speech still apply today. One issue I am going to talk about Pericless speech is Democracy. Greece was the first country who started Democracy during earlier times. Thus, I see that the democracy in Athenian times is very similar to what is used in the United States today. Specifically, Athenian democracy contrasts with U.S. system. It showed in the history that the democracy was unique and held as a model for other countries to follow. Pericless funeral oration reveals a lot of information about the greatest Ancient Greek empire. In my opinion, It reflects upon the values, culture and traditions of Athens that were popular of its times. It also touches me on some important aspects that are controlling the life of people in the ancient empire, respect for ancestors, and responsibilities for others. In addition, there are some things that loyalty, equality and fairness in treating of its citizens and neighbors as well as position of women in the society are touched to me by this speech. But most of all, the speech reflects upon great respect, appreciation and honor with which the whole community perceived the role of men protecting the values and heritage of their own city which is Athens. Pericles talks about honoring the acts of brave men who died in the battle a ...

The research in the field of Inclusive Education needs to gain universal recognition as the most pertinent issues such as the issues of the children with disabilities. It is noteworthy that these issues are many often vaguely addressed in analyses and studies. As the statement of the World Bank on disability and education points out, these are matters which determine the universal nature of education. The issues of the ethnic boys’ inclusion in universal education process has a scope just as the issues of the disabled children have.

The Toilet Yes...those tales you've heard are true. The toilet was first patented in England in 1775, invented by one Thomas Crapper, but the extraordinary automatic device called the flush toilet has been around for a long time. Leonardo Da Vinci in the 1400's designed one that worked, at least on paper, and Queen Elizabeth I reputably had one in her palace in Richmond in 1556, complete with flushing and overflow pipes, a bowl valve and a drain trap. In all versions, ancient and modern, the working principle is the same. Tripping a single lever (the handle) sets in motion a series of actions. The trip handle lifts the seal, usually a rubber flapper, allowing water to flow into the bowl. When the tank is nearly empty, the flap falls back in place over the water outlet. A floating ball falls with the water level, opening the water supply inlet valve just as the outlet is being closed. Water flows through the bowl refill tube into the overflow pipe to replenish the trap sealing water. As the water level in the tank nears the top of the overflow pipe, the float closes the inlet valve, completing the cycle. From the oldest of gadgets in the bathroom, let's turn to one of the newest, the toothpaste pump. Sick and tired of toothpaste squeezed all over your sink and faucets? Does your spouse never ever roll down the tube and continually squeezes it in the middle? Then the toothpaste pump is for you! When you press the button it pushes an internal, grooved rod down the tube. Near the bottom of the rod is a piston, supported by little metal flanges called "dogs", which seat themselves in the grooves on the rod. As the rod moves down, the dogs slide out of the groove they're in and click into the one above it. When you release the button, the spring brings the rod back up carrying the piston with it, now seated one notch higher. This pushes one-notch's-worth of toothpaste out of the nozzle. A measured amount of toothpaste every time and no more goo on the sink. Refrigerators Over 90 percent of all North American homes with electricity have refrigerators. It seems to be the one appliance that North Americans can just not do without. The machine's popularity as a food preserver is a relatively recent phenomenon, considering that the principles were known as early as 1748. A liquid absorbs heat from its surroundings when it evaporates into a gas; a gas release... ... alone are sold every day in North America. Ink feeds by gravity through five veins in a nose cone, usually made of brass, to a tungsten carbide ball. During the writing process, the ball rotates, picking up a continuous ink supply through the nose cone and transferring it to the writing paper. The ball is a perfect sphere, which must fit precisely into the extremely smooth nose cone socket so that it will rotate freely yet be held tightly in place so that there is an even ink flow. Although it sounds deceptively simple, perhaps the most amazing thing about ball-point pens is the ink. Why doesn't it just run out the end? Why doesn't it dry up in the plastic cartridge? Bic describes the ink as "exclusive, fast-drying, yet free flowing". The formula is, of course, secret. In the 19th century, writer and thinker Ralph Waldo Emerson expressed a fear that perhaps we all feel to some extent, that "things are in the saddle and ride Mankind". But with the help of good household reference books, friendly reference librarians, and helpful manufacturers only too willing to help consumers understand their products, we can at least get a rein on the technology in our homes.

Strategy and Planning Essay

Strategy and planning essay 1. Executive Summary: In this research paper we will briefly discuss about the essential factors that involved in strategic planning and decision making and the change management and the importance of change management. The essay is all about the important strategic tools which can be implemented in order to get an excellent strategic plan. In conclusion the back bone of any organisation which tends to become a success lies upon each and every decision they make and they must take into consideration the forces which act on the macro environment and in the micro environment of the organisation. . Introduction Planning and Strategy are the essential factors which act as the back bone of an organisation. A company with an excellent strategic planning and change management capabilities is sure to get a concrete market stake in this dynamic business environment. Some organizations tend to leave the strategic part of business planning and end up in bankruptcy. S trategy is the way to achieving short and long term goals. Planning is the means of achieving the goals through strategy while exploiting the available resources. 3. Main Body: (a) Strategy and Planning: The term strategy is derived from the Greek word strategos which means the highest ranking army general. So we can derive from these words the importance of strategy and the out come of strategy. Strategy is a tool which helps to create an advantage over the competition in the dynamic business environment. To create a strategic plan for an organisation there are certain constraints which are to be followed in order to achieve the optimum benefits from the decisions we make through strategy and planning. The maximum exploitation of our resources is the key to advantage over the competitors. Marketing is one of the main areas in which a well versed strategic plan can make the organisation to attract customers here the way in which we describe the organizations motives, goals and the de dication to the customers reflect in our adverts. So, cleverly placing the right factors in the right place is a challenge in the strategic planning decision making. In this ever changing business environment the only way of survival of an organisation depends upon the decisions it makes. Thus strategic planning is the key factor to success. In this research we will briefly discuss about the tools of strategy and the outcomes of implementing these tools in an organisation. We will discuss about SWOT analysis, PESTEL analysis and Potter's Five Force. 3 (b). SWOT Analysis SWOT analysis is one of the tools in strategic planning and decision making. This tool helps us to judge the organizations position in the business environment. SWOT stands for Strength, Weakness, Opportunities and Threats. Strength – The organizations factors which are most influential with respect to customers, market share, and brand value and so on. The strength of an organisation maybe its good will, an exc ellent customer relationship management and many other sensitive factors which lies on the organizations side. Weakness – The things which are an advantage of the competitor and a disadvantage to our organisation. The weakness factor may depend upon our organizations own business policies and or work ethics which binds us to a corner, the competitors takes advantage of this issue and exploit the opportunity but fine tuning our strategy and decision making will bring in a drastic change. Opportunities – The chance in which all the things fall in line for our organisation to exploit and to make a profit of it is the definition for opportunities. Opportunities can occur due to a change in trend of customers, brand switching an so on.It is wise for an organisation to make use of such opportunities. Threats – The main and most important factor is the threats from rivals and competitors. If an organisation fails to with stand the threats from the competitors then it wi ll surely end up in bankruptcy, the competition may come up with innovative ways of marketing and attracting customers so it is our bounded duty to over come the competitors by creating innovative ways of marketing through strategic planning.Example for SWOT analysis – Soft drink giant: Coca-Cola Strengths One of the most successful organisations of all time. The brand value of Coca-Cola is worth more than $68 million in 2009. the company manages its products over 200 countries with over 700 products which is a gigantic goal to achieve but maintaining it as the leader of its kind is still another battle. People tend to be faithful to the Coca-Cola brand because of its one main product the cola drink. So a wide variety of different products from the company with the same brand name tends to market the products for itself. (www. interbrand. com) Weaknesses The Coca-ColaCompany products are beverages so the main weakness for them is that they have this lobby of beverage segment a nd this is might be their weakness because in the long run they might hit the ground if any other company produces a better beverage. And nowadays people tend to make choices more often than in the past so it is a vulnerable area to be looked upon! OpportunitiesPeople are concerned about their health now more than ever so the introduction of Coke Zero a new product from the Coca-ColaCompany is catching up a considerable amount of market share because of its new distinct taste without added sugar in some countries but basically it's a new drink with zero calories, the company claims!. The company is exploiting the current trend of health criteria. Threats The main competitor of Coca-ColaCompany is the PepsiCo Inc, the Pepsi Cola Company introduces new products in response to the Coca-ColaCompany. The Coca-ColaCompany is trying very hard to cope up with the situation. During 998 the PepsiCo Inc managed to out smart the company. So without the proper strategic planning PepsiCo will soo n go beyond the Coke's victory 3(c). The PESTLE Analysis The most important tool of strategic planning is the PESTEL analysis. The PESTEL analysis is a tool which helps us to judge our position in the market with respect to the macro environment. PESTLE stands for P – Political Forces, E – Economical Forces, S -Social Forces, T -Technological Forces, L – Legislative Forces and E – Environmental Forces. These forces influence the overall performance, market value, finance and customer relationship of the company. We will briefly discuss about the PESTEL forces one by one by implementing into an organisation. Example : Integrated Electronics (INTEL) Semiconductors. The Intel Semiconductors are the producers of the famous Intel microchips which literally runs the computer industry but with some rivals such as AMD Inc (Advanced Micro devices). Here we will apply the PESTEL analysis to know the factors that are influencing the Intel semiconductors. Political : The implementation of new taxes and the internationalism of the products tends to make the company to adhere to strict rules in each country which the company is ventured on.So Intel is focusing upon its new products onto buyers and not on further research and development because of the political pressure around the organisation. Porter's Five Forces:The porter's five forces is a business strategy tool which is used to analyse t he position of a company and assessing its strength with respect to the competitors in this case new entrants and their impact in this ever changing environment. The porter's five forces are: Existing rivalry among firms Threat of new entrants determinants of supplier power Determinants of buyer power Threat of substitute products Example: AIRBUS The porter's five applied to the Airbus aviation company who have been the most influential carriers of all time apart from Boeing. These two major aircraft companies were literally in a fight for gaining the considerable mount of market share. Since the introduction of Airbus A380 the Boeing Company has lost lot of customers. The new entrant in our case the A380 is so much advanced than the legendary Boeing 747 which literally ruled the skies. The Boeing 747 was a fuel efficient and economically well versed passenger and good carrier aircraft but the major flaw in the Boeing decision making is that it was not concentrating on the future of the aircraft but it produced a wide variant of Boeing 700 series but the cleverly devised strategic plan of Airbus was a nightmare to the Boeing corporation. The A380 has an excellent performance with regardless of its massive size the jumbo jet can people double the time the Boeing 747 used to carry. Since the aviation industry has only fewer concentrations of rivals the market share is huge compared to other industries. So with the new A380, Airbus has a considerable amount of stake in the airline industry. But Boeing's answer to A380 is the new 787 dreamliner. Which is more fuel efficient but in the case of size the A380 outsmarts the Boeing. Importance of Change: The change management in an organisation is the most important factor which influences the future of an organisation. It describes an strategic approach in modifying or altering an organizations internal factors such as teams, individuals etc. there are different ways to achieve the change in an organisation by collabora tive – which is done by providing workshops and seminars explaining about the change to the people working in the organization. Consultative – the people are informed about the change and the feedback of the change is taken into consideration. Directive – the members of the staff are informed about the details of the change and the sensitivity of the change.Coercive – the members are forced to follow the change. Example of Change: The acquisition of Iberia by British Airways The British Airways acquired the Iberia for $7 billion and it made the third largest airline in the world. The member of the staff was quickly adapted to the change in different management team. The Iberia staff members were given a change management session on order to cope up with the new acquisition. The acquisition made the stock holder's value to increase and they were given a 55 percent of the new airline's share. 4. Conclusion:We have so far discussed about some of the Strategi c planning tools and the ways in which they can be exploited. And in conclusion we can say that the way in which we approach the organisation with the necessary tools and strategic planning will make a gigantic impact on the organisation in the present and in the future. In this ever changing business environment the challenge for each organisation is to identify the needs of the customers and to create an appropriate strategic plan to approach the problem which will provide the optimum results which can benefit the customers as well as the organisation. . Bloemfontein concentration camp during the Boer War Introduction The Boer war has recently ended and the British have won the war. For the British, this meant that the Boers who were fighting at the moment, would no longer be able to obtain food or other needs from their families. Moreover, it also meant that the men wouldn’t get to see their families. Nevertheless, their main goal was to demoralise the Boers by leaving their women and children†¦show more content†¦This chart shows the daily diet of Boer Prisoners. Refugees | Undesirables |  ½ lb. However, it was not the required quantity of food for a person. Besides that, the meat was barely cooked, and often the meat would be given to the prisoners with ice.
